A bridge too far...

In the morning before I caught my plane back to London, Rationals and SRB singer Scott Morgan took me on a tour of Ann Arbor haunts. Among them were The Armory, which was both the site of Mothers Teenage Nightclub and the location where a generation of AA musicians fagged out of the draft, tutored by local kingpin Jeep Holland. We went to John Sinclair and the MC5’s HQ on Hill Street, University Tower, where Iggy, Scott and James holed up as the Stooges crashed and burned in a heroin haze first time around, Discount Records, out to the Fun House on Packard – now a bank – the house on State Street where the Psychedelic Stooges played for the first time at a houseparty. And last but not least the 10 foot six inches high bridge on Washington where Scott Asheton attempted to drive a 12 foot high van. Here’s how Rock Action remembers it:

“I was just giving them a break, (for the roadies to) get some rest so I was driving myself and was cutting through town, and I wasn't... a qualified truck driver. It was a 12 foot truck with a 10 foot bridge. Missed it by a clean two feet! Ha ha. Smack, wow I hit so hard, it wasn't till I was laying out on the road, and we'd stopped rolling, and I turned around and looked. And realised what the fuck happened.”
