Carol Martin was a pupil at Tappan who knew Jim, as well as Jim’s best friend Kenny Miller. Kenny was the son of Ford Boss Arjay Miller, and godson of Robert McNamara, the secretary of Defense. As you’ll have surmised, Jim was very well connected for a self-styled outsider. Carol used to take dance lessons at the Millers’ house, along with a bunch of other girls and boys who would all be formally dressed, right down to skirts and long gloves for the girls.

 

I’ve mentioned earlier how Jim Osterberg told at least one fellow pupil that he lived in Ann Arbor hills, the swanky area of town. Carol took this photo, of the Millers’ house on Devonshire. It was presumably the kind of place Jim was fantasising about.
